John Hemenway

John Hemenway (67) of Leominster went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sat. Nov. 8.  His battle with cancer is finally over.  He leaves behind his wife of 44 years, Gerd Brita, his sons, Stephen, and David and his wife Lisa, his sister Joyce O'Neill and several nephews and nieces.  He was a music teacher in several Leominster elementary schools, Gallagher Middle School, Leominster High School, Lunenburg High school, Ayer High School ,Fitchburg McKay School, Perkins School in Lancaster, and retired June 2006 from the Worcester School system.  John was a member of many local musical groups including, Lunenburg Town Band, Leominster Colonial Band, Ashby Town Band, Townsend Town Band, and Fitchburg Town Band and played throughout the summer at evening concerts.  A member of the local musicians union, he had the opportunity to play for many area high school and college musical productions, graduations, and concerts.  As a member of the Brass Revelation, he played in many area churches as well as soloing vocally and instrumentally with many local groups including the Leonard Gaskins Choral, Worcester's Mastersingers, and The  Montachusett Chorale. He was a member of the 18th Army Band stationed at Fort Devens from 1969-1972.  As a member of the Gideons International, John was involved in the placement of many Bibles in nursing homes, schools, colleges, prisons, hospitals, hotels and motels in the MA area.  He was a deacon, Stockade Leader and choir director at Highland Baptist Church where he was a member.  Calling hours are at 10, a Memorial service at 11, followed by a light luncheon at Highland Baptist Church, 19 Cedar Street, Fitchburg, MA on Saturday the 15th.  Donations can be made in his memory to The Gideons International, Box 661, Fitchburg, MA 01420 or online www.gideons.org/sendtheword.
