Roy L Stockwell

February 11, 1920 ~ October 8, 2016 (age 96) 96 Years Old

Roy L. STOCKWELL of Fitchburg went to be with his Lord & Savior Jesus Christ on October 8, 2016.

Roy was born in Fitchburg, MA on February 11, 1920, son of O. Lester & Grace (Grant) Stockwell. He grew up on the Stockwell Farm on Marshall Rd. with 8 brothers & sisters, one of whom was a twin brother, Guy.  He graduated from Fitchburg High School in 1939. During WWII, he served in the US Army as HQ Jeep Driver for the 8th Field Hospital in the European Theatre for 3 years and was honorably discharged in November 1945. After his marriage to Johanna (Joan) Boverhuis in 1946 he lived on Scott Rd. in Fitchburg for 56 years. He worked for the Fitchburg Paper Co. for 42 years retiring in June 1982.  Roy played basketball & softball in highschool and for Fitchburg Paper Co. teams for 15 years. A member of Highland Baptist Church since 1938 he sang in the choir for 70 years retiring in May 2010 & was given the title “Tenor Emeritus.” He loved to sing around the house while doing small chores. An avid vegetable & flower grower he also loved working on projects to improve his home. Roy’s hobby was baking pies, especially strawberry-rhubarb, with rhubarb with his own garden.

He was predeceased by his wife of 52 years Joan (Boverhuis) Stockwell, his teenage son Mark, brothers Phillip, Carl, Rolland, Twin brother, Guy, sisters Irene Polliot, Lillian Spinney, & Dorothy Bilodeau.

Roy leaves his wife Emma (Yaczko) Desjarlais-Stockwell whom he married in January 2003.

Stepson & his wife John & Virginia Desjarlais of Byron, IL

Sister Marjorie Dik of Fitchburg, MA

The funeral will be held Sunday, October 16, 2016 at 2PM at Highland Baptist Church, 19 Cedar St., Fitchburg, MA 01420 with refreshments to follow. There are no calling hours. Interment Service at Forest Hill Cemetery, Fitchburg, MA will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Highland Baptist Church Building Fund or the Gideons.

Aubuchon-Moorcroft Funeral Home Fitchburg is assisting the family with arrangements.
