Arthur C Newcombe

Arthur C. Newcombe of Fitchburg, MA passed Tuesday, August 8th at Leominster Hospital at the age of 76. He leaves behind his wife of 53 years, Mary F. (Scanlon), their son A. Scott Newcombe and wife Beth, their daughter Sherrie Morey and husband Mike and their daughter Maria Ricciuti.  He was devoted to his beloved grandchildren Nathan Newcombe, Hallie Newcombe, Maggie Morey, Lily Morey and Evie Morey all of whom will miss him greatly.  He was predeceased by his parents, Percy and Marion Newcombe and his sisters, Ruth Johnson and Ellen Mustakangus.

                Art graduated from Fitchburg High School, Class of 1959, and he received a degree in education from Fitchburg State College in 1964.   He also received his Master of Math Education from Framingham State University.    An educator for more than 40 years, he spent his life getting ready to go to school every Fall.  He started his career in Leominster at May A. Gallagher Middle School, then moved to the Fitchburg Public School System where he worked as a teacher and administrator for over 34 years. During those years he dedicated himself to student involvement and prided himself on being a mentor to many.   He also served as Class Advisor to the Class of 1973.

                Art was passionate in his commitment to serving others.  He demonstrated this commitment in many ways, including his involvement in the Fitchburg High School Alumni Association.  He served as a member for 33 years and served on the board for 24 years. He also served as a counselor for Tri-City council 823 and held various leadership positions including Past Grand Councilor in the Grand Council of New England in the United Commercial Travelers of America.

Art and his wife Mary also found much joy in their retirement.  In addition to spending time with family and friends close to home, they treasured their winters with their friends in Bonita Springs, Florida and their trips to the Cape during the summer. One of his favorite accomplishments he was able to achieve with his wife in retirement was traveling the entire continental United States.

Calling Hours  4-8 pm Sunday August 13 at the Aubuchon-Moorcoft Funeral Home 132 Woodland Street, Fitchburg, MA. 01420. Funeral Service will be Monday August 14, 2017 10:00 am at Leominster United Methodist Church 77 Hall Street Leominster, MA 01453.  Internment to follow at St Bernard’s Cemetery in Fitchburg MA.

                In Lieu of flowers Art’s family asks for donations to the Fitchburg High School Alumni Association  Art Newcombe Memorial Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 906 Fitchburg, MA 01420.
